Note 03 /

Battle of the Bids, Round 3

A note on winning $100,000 on a real estate auction TV show — and being the first investor (rather than a broker) to win a top prize in either of its first two seasons.

Battle of the Bids is a CoStar / Ten-X auction show. Each round, a panel of investors and brokers bids real money on a real property; the audience and the producer's data feed both judge the winner. I won Round 3 of Season 2 — $100,000 — and was the first investor (rather than a broker) to take a top prize in either season.

There is something useful, when you spend most of your hours underwriting deals on paper, about being asked to underwrite one in forty minutes on television. The exercise strips out the parts of the process that are politeness, and leaves only the parts that are math and instinct. It turns out the math was the easier of the two.
